Mathematics meets Art at Aplimat 2018

The Institute of Mathematics and Physics of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava) has hosted from February 6 to 8 the 17th Conference on Applied Mathematics Aplimat 2018. The Mathematics and Art section,  dedicated to the memory of Mauro Francaviglia, has taken place on February 7 featuring communications by Silvia Benvenuti, Federico Brunetti, Alessandra Capanna, Luigi Cocchiarella, Corrado Falcolini, Lucas Haude, Loe Feijs, Gino Iannace, Marcella Giulia Lorenzi, Paola Magnaghi-Delfino, Paola Magrone, Jaroslav Marek, Giampiero Melle, Tullia Norando, Laura Tedeschini Lalli, Matteo Torre (together with his students from Liceo Scientifico Statale “L.B. Alberti” at Valenza), Stanislaw Zawislak.

Also for the Mathematics and Art theme, the plenary session of February 6 – chaired by Daniela Velichová – featured the invited lecture Twines, knots, mazes: an encounter with Paola Levi Montalcini across art and mathematics by Andrea Toschi. This lecture presented some insights into the mathematical curves that were used in some of her works by the artist, twin sister of 1986 Nobel Prize winner Rita Levi Montalcini.
