Sicilian “Opera dei Pupi” performed in Rome

National Folk Traditions Museum hosts a show by master puppeteer Vincenzo Mancuso

In Rome, from 20 to 22 March, in the Salone d’Onore of Museo Nazionale delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari in collaboration with Museo internazionale delle Marionette Antonio Pasqualino di Palermo, a unique performance of Opera dei Pupi (the traditional Sicilian puppet show) will be staged, the play Duello di Orlando e Rinaldo per amore di Angelica with master puppeteer Vincenzo Mancuso, heir to the tradition of one of the foremost families of pupari in Palermo.

During the days of the performance it will still be possible to visit in the Sala Dossier the exhibition I Cavalieri della Memoria, retracing the Sicilian chivalric tradidions, such as Opera dei Pupi, as well as other customs  – ritual or festive –  that take inspiration from ancient epic ballads or from the Breton or Carolingian cycles.
