A Tale of Shawms and Hoboys

Concert-lecture with Angela Paletta and young pupils in a Tuscan hamlet

Chiesa di San Giorgio at Montemerano: detail from the Assumption of the Virgin by Lorenzo di Pietro, known as Il Vecchietta

Next Saturday 24 May at 5.30PM the Biblioteca di Storia dell’Arte at Montemerano (Grosseto, Italy) will host the concert-lecture From the Shawm to the modern Oboe, an event organized by Accademia del Libro di Montemerano, Filarmonica “G. Verdi” di Montemerano and Il Teatro della Memoria, with the support of Comune di Manciano. During the meeting – curated by Il Teatro della Memoria – oboist Angela Paletta will illustrate the evolution of the instrument starting from Renaissance double reed aerophones (shawm, ciaramella). The musical repertories from the various periods will be exemplified with live performance by the speaker accompanied by Ilaria Castagnetti e Gabriele De Nisco – two young pupils of the Early music workshop L’Humor Bizzarro – and Andrea Toschi (bassoon). The historical oboes played by the students have been kindly provided by the maker Alberto Ponchio.

In Montemerano – besides the Chiesa di San Giorgio with 15th century frescoes and the Madonna della Gattaiola – it’s possible to visit the charming hamlet recently featured in the TV program Sereno Variabile (see link). Nearby are the scenic Cascate del Mulino thermal waterfall and the Terme di Saturnia spa.

Travel directions: from the Thyrrhenic coast you can reach Montemerano through Manciano (from Albinia take SS74 road, from Montalto di Castro SP105, from the Viterbo area follow the directions for Pitigliano or Valentano-Ischia di Castro-Farnese). From Grosseto take SS322 through Scansano. From Mount Amiata go through Saturnia. Navigator coordinates are 42.620772, 11.491468 – see map on Google Maps.
